People are not “independent” and “dependent”.

People are “dependent in socially acceptable ways” and “dependent in socially unacceptable ways”.

In other words it’s socially acceptable to be dependent because you’re rich and therefore can pay others to do everything for you

And it’s socially unacceptable to be dependent because not only do you have the inability to do certain things alone but it’s also possible that your parents are partially responsible for the fact that you don’t have social cues for important things.

It’s socially acceptable to be dependent on your employees to become rich but not socially acceptable to be poor and dependent on taxpayers.

It’s socially acceptable for a grown man with no disabilities to be dependent on his wife for simple household tasks, but not socially acceptable to be disabled and dependent on a caregiver.

Thank you for describing that better, but also it’s acceptable to have an assistant speak for you if you’re rich, but not if you’re disabled and poor.

There has already been a post on environmental sexism but this is just a reminder

It’s not really sexism, it’s not wanting to deal with fruiting bodies from these plants

We deal with leaves tho??? And overgrown roots??? And dead branches after bad storms??? Why not give us fruiting plants??? Maybe peoppe can eat them???

So I watched Cats yesterday

When the certificate for the film came up ahead of it, two women next to me went “U??! They think this film is for children???”.

The first scene began, and the performers gyrated down to the ground, and a man behind me went “Jesus” out loud, in this appalled and transfixed tone.

The film continued. Within five minutes, the whole audience was audibly going “What the FUCK” at regular intervals - sometimes you could just hear horrified giggling all around the room.

Half an hour in, a couple got up and walked out.

Mr Mistoffeles sang about being an entirely black cat, and I accidentally said aloud “But he’s black and white.” Taylor Swift sang about Macavity being ginger, and I actually yelled “BUT HE’S NOT GINGER”. A woman in the front went “Oh my god, she’s right.”

Ian McKellen turned up and said the words “Meow meow meow meow” apropos of literally nothing at all. Everyone in the room fucking howled. We’d forged a silent, unspoken bond. The whole audience were united in the shared traumatic fever dream in which we found ourselves. Five minutes later, my husband sneezed, and felt so comfortable among the community that had molded itself around us that he automatically said out loud “Sorry, I’m allergic to cats”, and a sizeable chunk of the audience genuinely laughed, albeit mildly hysterically.

The film finished with Judi Dench breaking the fourth wall, and we all squirmed and looked at each other instead of the screen.

The credits rolled and the whole audience applauded and cheered. It was the most transformative experience of my life. I begin 2020 already changed.

I love every review I’ve seen of Cats.

Watch: John Cena continues, “So, let’s try this one more time. Close your eyes.”

x

King

Worth noting that he protested loudly against the WWE doing a show in Saudi Arabia after the assassination of Jamal Khashoggi, and the company retaliated by making sure he hasn’t been on TV or PPV since. Not fired, of course, so they can keep selling merchandise with his face on it (and keep him from joining the competition), just out of the public eye so he and his protests gets forgotten by the fans.

Picture that: an ubiquitous celeb and household name like John Cena basically got black bagged and vanished for speaking up for human rights. That’s the power of capitalism, kids
